Dyslexic Considerations in Web Design

Posted by on Friday, October 31st, 2008 at 11:51 am.

Exploring the notions that Dyslexia subverts classical approach in design is a useful concept for designers to contemplate; it can add understanding on a creative level and in the thought process of design giving answers to why design is interpreted and approached in contrasting ways. Considering these alternative approaches may even explain why a classical approach is not suitable for every designer; it may also show that various messages are created and interpreted differently because of the individual’s mind and incapacity to process more linear and classical approaches.

It needs to be considered how those affected with Dyslexia perceive and process information differently to others; it is not necessarily wrong to process information in a different way but it is different to the vast majority of people and to the way in which they read and write.

Considerations need to be made in how Dyslexics are unable to process information purely in an orderly fashion, but skim the surface of a piece of work and may miss key pieces of information in order to understand the piece on face value; therefore their thought process is more musical and wave like by picking out information at different intervals as opposed to doing so in a chronological or linear order. In addition to this a designs various messages, whether it’s through the medium of web and print, are created and interpreted differently by different people. The ultimate focus of this; is if Dyslexia is just another way of interpreting graphics like any other traditional or contemporary theory? If so does it subvert the traditional methods?

What is certain though this is that a ‘dyslexic gaze’ can provide a different interpretation to graphics than a more traditional one; this does not mean it has any more substance or subverts traditional analysis, but, does offer alternative views and opinions and provides a space and language for people with Dyslexia to communicate their interpretation and provide alternative interpretations of graphics to provoke academic thought and interesting continuity in graphic theory.
