This week’s web design video tutorial shows you how to remove the speech bubble from Google Map iFrames. This week, Nick and James also introduce their first website tip for business owners.
This Week’s Web design News
Hi and welcome to this week’s web design video blog. Firstly we wanted to show you an online test that Google’s developers have put together for web masters. The test obviously revolves around indexing and has 40 questions that range from robots.txt files to what to do when your website has been hacked. The questions are multiple choice, and the test has been designed as a bit of fun. You can find the test on Google’s Webmaster Central Blog – which they have set up using Google Docs. Google will then following up with another blog post that go through all the answers and the reasons behind them.
This Week’s HTML Tutorial
Over the course of the last year, we have released 2 previous video blogs on Google Maps. 1 Showing you how to add or verify your business; and another showing how to embed maps onto your website. This week, we wanted to show you how to remove the Speech Bubble, leaving just the red push pin when you embed your company’s map onto your website.
Website Tips For Businesses #1
Over the next couple of weeks we are going to start sharing website tips that are more aimed at business owners rather than people in the web design industry. Tip 1 is making sure that your company’s domain names or ‘web addresses’ are registered to your business and not to your website design company. Domain Names are the property of the company that purchases them, and should be registered in the name of that company.
To check if your domain name has been registered to your business, the easiest way is to do what is known as a ‘whois’ check. You can perform a ‘whois’ check for free on the internet. I like to use easily.co.uk which is a domain registration company based in the UK. So to check who your domain is registered to, simply type it into the domain box, and scroll down to the taken section. Then click on the little blue info button next to your domain name. This performs a whois check, and displays the results. If like ours, it is registered in your name, then you have nothing to worry about. If however, you see your web design company’s details here, you should contact them and insist they register the domain name in your name.
If the domain name is not registered in your name, and your web design company refuses to release your domain name to you, then the process of acquiring them becomes much harder. Thank you for watching this week, if you have any questions or comments, please leave them on our supporting blog post or on our YouTube channel.
